ACT

The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It evaluates a student’s knowledge and skills in key academic areas, including English, math, reading, and science.

Structure

The ACT consists of four mandatory sections:

  • English: Focuses on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills (75 questions, 45 minutes).
  • Math: Assesses algebra, geometry, and trigonometry (60 questions, 60 minutes).
  • Reading: Measures reading comprehension and ability to analyze texts (40 questions, 35 minutes).
  • Science: Tests scientific reasoning, data interpretation, and critical thinking (40 questions, 35 minutes).
  • Writing: An optional 40-minute essay section where students analyze a given argument (note: some colleges may require this section).

Scoring

  • Each of the four main sections is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, and the composite score is the average of the four section scores.
  • The Writing section (if taken) is scored separately on a scale of 2 to 12.
  • The total score range is from 1 to 36, and the composite score is rounded to the nearest whole number.

Time Limit

The ACT takes about 2 hours and 55 minutes without the essay and 3 hours and 35 minutes with the essay.

College and Scholarship Eligibility

ACT scores are used by colleges and universities for admissions and scholarship decisions. A strong ACT score can improve a student’s chances of getting into their desired schools and qualifying for merit-based scholarships..
