The SAT is a standardized college admissions test used by most U.S. colleges and universities to assess a student’s readiness for college. It evaluates skills in reading, writing, and math.
The SAT consists of three main sections:
o Reading: Focuses on reading comprehension, interpreting texts, and understanding vocabulary
in context.
o Writing and Language: Assesses grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, including
editing and revising written passages.
o Math: Divided into two parts:
- One allows a calculator.
- One does not allow a calculator.
o Essay (Optional): A 50-minute essay section where students are asked to analyze a passage
and explain how the author constructs an argument (note: some colleges may not
require this).
The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600, combining the scores from the Reading/Writing sections (200-800) and the Math section (200-800). The Essay is scored separately.
The test lasts about 3 hours (without the essay) or 3 hours and 50 minutes (with the essay).
A good SAT score can improve a student’s chances of getting accepted into a desired college or qualifying for scholarships. Many colleges have SAT score requirements or use the scores to offer merit-based scholarships.
